What opening stock means

Understand opening stock quantity and opening stock notes.

Opening stock is the starting quantity Bizwazi uses when you first create an inventory item. It is the stock figure before later sales, invoice payments, bill purchases, or manual adjustments change the item.

Opening stock quantity

  • This is the starting stock number for the item.
  • Use the physical count you have when you begin using Bizwazi for that item.
  • If you currently have 30kg of sugar, enter 30 and use kg as the unit.
  • If you currently have 100 bottles, enter 100 and use bottles as the unit.

Opening stock note

  • The opening stock note explains where the starting figure came from.
  • Example: Opening count at start of April.
  • Example: Stock counted after closing on Friday.
  • Example: Imported from old notebook.

Why it matters

  • If opening stock is wrong, every later stock figure may look wrong.
  • A good opening note makes it easier to understand old stock records later.
  • Opening stock creates the first point in the stock movement history.

How to fix wrong opening stock

  • Open the item.
  • Use a manual stock adjustment to set the correct stock level.
  • Choose a reason that matches what happened.
  • Add a note explaining the correction.
